ndia is one of the oldest coffee-growing countries in the world, with a legend of Baba Budan smuggling seven coffee seeds from Yemen to Karnataka to start the coffee story in the mid-1600s. Coffee continues to flourish in Karnataka’s tropical climate, especially in the highlands around Coorg and Chikmagalur.
The Western Ghats UNESCO World Heritage Site, which traverses Karnataka, is home to many of India’s finest specialty coffee farms. Producers here are deeply committed to sustainable farming, preserving indigenous shade trees, using wildlife-friendly inputs, and considering the broader environmental impact of their practices. Hospura Estate, run by Abrar Zoheb, and located at the foothills of Western Ghats exemplifies these values.
This micro-lot from Abrar’s farm is a classic washed process Arabica. With such a long heritage in coffee India has it’s own set of cultivars still used by farmers, often with more Typica lineage than many cultivars. This selection combines S975, a selection from the well known Kent selection along with the newer Chandragiri, again developed within India.
Hospura is an accessible and moreish intro to Indian coffee. A medium roast brings a rich chocolate depth, accompanied by notes of roasted hazelnut and butterscotch. Bright lemon and orange citrus notes enhance the juicy acidity, while flame raisins contribute subtle sweetness. The mouthfeel is full and carries these flavours through to a balanced medium finish.
