The lush, green rolling mountains and deep valleys of Rwanda’s highlands are home to hundreds of coffee washing stations, the centralised points for smallholders to process their coffee. Almost all of this coffee is the high quality and accessible Bourbon cultivar, or its local variants like Jackson and Mayaguez. This means when flavour profile changes in Rwanda beyond the beloved supreme balance, and a delicious sugar browning notes, the coffees it does so as a result of local terroir.

Less than a decade old, Gitwe produces classic washed process coffees and are innovating with honey and natural processes too. This honey process from Gitwe showcases the deft and guile station manager Augustin has in creating coffees that merge the old with the new, maintaining classic Rwanda profiles with an added layer of complexity Coffees like Gitwe, located to the west of Rwanda near Lake Kivu, often exhibit more berry and cherry fruit notes. In this honey process, a raspberry jam base represents this well, combining with notes of brown sugar, honey, and dried dates to form a fruit-forward base to the coffee.

Further flavours of almond, citrus fruit, and black tea add layers of interest and structure. The mouthfeel is syrupy, accentuating the jamminess of Gitwe and supporting a zesty, harmonious, effortlessly balanced acidity.
We’ve roasted this towards the lighter side of our roasting style to bring out the higher fruit and floral notes of the coffee. This leans it towards filter, French press and aeropress brewing. For those with an espresso machine wanting to experiment with a different style of espresso, more like a lungo, Gitwe is a great coffee to start. A 1:5 ratio pulled in 30 seconds will give you a syrupy sweet coffee with bold notes of raspberry, orange marmalade, and light molasses..
