Café Granja la Esperanza are known throughout the world of specialty coffee as producers of ultra rare specialty high altitude coffees. It’s an umbrella name for a group of five century old farms spread across Valle del Cauca and Cundinamarca. The farms experiment with rare exquisite varieties of Arabica that need special attention and farming practices to allow them to thrive.
Laurina is most famous in the world of coffee for being a naturally low caffeine variety. First identified on the island of Bourbon in the early 1800s, Laurina has a distinctive pointed shape and the plant has a unique Christmas tree shape. Bourbon is now known as Reunion but its old name is a reminder of the islands crucial part in Arabica’s journey across the globe. It’s to this island that the French took plants from Yemen and the cultivars called Bourbon or have some form of Bourbon heritage in their genetic makeup have a link back to this small island in the Indian Ocean.
Being low in caffeine, a natural plant insect deterrent, means Laurina is not the most resistant cultivar to pests. This is part of the reason it remains an exotic and rare coffee to experience. At La Esperanza farm they process it in a similar way to other rarities, held in special silos for 48 hours to build fruit flavours and complexity. From there it dries over no longer than three weeks before being cured for three months before export.
Laurina roasts faster than the other coffees from Café Granja la Esperanza so a slower, gentler approach is taken in the first phase of roasting. This helps build heat through the coffee so we can control the final development of its delicious flavours. When brewed Laurina has a complex and fruit forward flavour profile. Blueberry, cherry and chocolate notes set a ripe and moreish dessert like quality to the coffee, accentuated by a creamy and supremely silky mouthfeel. Further flavours of grapefruit, lime and tropical fruit come through on the aftertaste with notes of cinnamon spice. The structure is juicy and long lasting with a winey tang that accentuates the fruit notes brilliantly.
With less than half the caffeine of a standard Arabica Laurina is a great coffee to enjoy later in the day or after an evening meal. The fruit forward flavour profile accentuated from the processing very much leads it to filter brewing. It’s here the complex structure, silky mouthfeel and exotic winey notes come though most.
